Everyone knows the frustration of being lost in a city that you have never been to before, which is why it is essential you know the exact road name and postcode of the place you are looking for. The Post Office's website is a good place to find residential addresses, and yell is a directory service that is good for business addresses.

Step 3: Find an online route planner

Most national automobile associations have a good route planner as part of their website. In the UK, the AA Route planner is an online tool to find directions to anywhere in Europe by car.

Step 4: Enter journey details

The AA Route Planner lets you search by street, postcode, town, city or place of interest, such as a hospital or train station. Enter the postcode you have already found to get the most detailed directions available. If you have multiple stops to make on your journey, you can enter them using the via option. You can also choose to avoid motorways or road charging on your route. Once you have entered all the information, click ‘get route.'

Step 5: Check the results

The next screen shows you the locations it has found based on the information you entered. Use the drop down menus to select the correct locations, and click the boxes underneath to generate a printable map of your route, with petrol stations, speed cameras and traffic blackspots clearly marked. Once everything is correct, click on ‘get route.'

Step 6: Reading your results

AA Route Planner will now show you your route details, both in map and written form. It will also work out the total distance of your journey, and an estimated time of journey. To print everything, click on the ‘print this page' link, which will take you to the print screen. You can also generate your return journey details by clicking on the ‘reverse this route' link.
