By far, the best option is go to your local rescue shelter. There are hundreds of rats in rescue shelters all across the country and in other rescue shelters in other countries as well, so please make sure you do check these out. You can find details of these on websites and yellow pages as well.

If you are going to consider getting them from any other places, go to a breeder that has a really good reputation and make sure that you are happy with their accommodation and that the rats are in really good health. When you're going to choose the rats and you go into a local rescue shelter, make sure you are able to handle them. Particularly if they're going to be children's first pets, encourage the children to sit down on the floor and let the rats walk over them and see how they react with them.

Not all rats are going to settle with children and not all children are going to like the rats that the rescue shelters might have in. So it's important you visit a few places and that the whole family's able to handle them and meet them and make sure that both the animal and the human are happy together. Rats must always kept ion either pairs or small groups.

They need the companionship of their own kind, they often do social activities such as grooming each other, they'll play and they also spend lots of time investigating and foraging for food, and investigating with their toys in their own accommodation as well. Make sure you keep them in groups. It's important that they are kept in same sex groups.

When you go to check any place that you choose to purchase your rats from, make sure they do appear happy, they're healthy, their coats are really looking in good condition, their eyes and their noses appear clean and they're feeding well as well. Do find out what diet they've been on, what bedding they've been on and what access they have had to handling them as well. Make sure that you spend a good amount of time with the rats before you do choose to take them home and make sure you are able to handle them and really get a good understanding.
