Hi, I'm Gavin Hodgeson, fly fishing instructor and manager of Granger's Fish and Tackle, here in South Kensington, London. We're going to talk you through some of the techniques and tips and help you get started in fishing. Sea bass fishing, sea bass fishing again, we can do this in many ways.
The conventional methods, same rod would apply, a light spinning outfit, great fun on harbors, Getty's, beach front. Have a lot of fun with that. Fishing lures, conventional spinners, Flogs, various diving depths and actions.
All imitative, we can fish other things, live bait. We can fish prawns, fish strips, strips of Mackerel and do very well with bass. Once again, we're fly fishing specialists so we like to approach them with a fly rod.
Similar rod, Lanford number 8. Lanford number 8 would do most things with salt water fishing, great for bass, UK and the US. Flies wise, we're imitating Bear Fish, we're imitating shrimps.
A lot of these are surface lures, some of them are divers. But we've got, they're all covered with colors, lots of flashings in the dressings. In general, start of the season, we tend to fish quite large.
We're fishing in conditions that are quite challenging so we're going out there with a heavy line. Often, what were trying to imitate are sandial pans. Here's a rubber sandial, now that's quite a small sandial, they obviously grow much larger than that.
But you can see from some of the profiles of the flies, that's exactly what we're trying to imitate. Now, when it comes to locating the bass, we're looking at structures, we're looking at places along the seafront with tide rips, and we're looking for sand banks, places that fish congregate to find food. All of these areas hold bass, and you can approach them all with any of this kit that we've talked about.
Glasses, obviously when it comes to fly fishing, glasses are important for protection but it also helps you to see fish. When you're fishing places where the water's clear and bass are fishing close to the surface, these polarized lenses will help you spot the fish. Very important for us.
When it comes to unhooking, good saltwater pliers are going to do great for cutting line as well as unhooking your fish. .
