How To Fix Squeaky Floorboards

Squeaky floorboards are caused by loose boards rubbing against nails, or each other. It's not too much of a hassle for the amateur DIY er to fix.

Step 1: You will need

  • 1 talcum powder
  • 1 damp cloth
  • 1 drill
  • 1 screwdriver
  • 1 50mm screw

Step 2: Get powdering

Locating the mischievous floorboard is easy, step on each board one at a time until you hear that annoying Eek. This is your fella.

Sprinkle talcum powder, or flour if you must, around the board and sweep it into the cracks. And a little extra on the nails. The powder will ease the friction between the boards and nails, hopefully eradicating the squeaking. Don't vacuum, but wipe away the excess with a damp cloth.

Step 3: Screw it down

If the powder trick didn't work get your drill at the ready. Screw in a 50 mm screw alongside the present nails. You need to put them next to the nails to guarantee they go into a joist and avoiding any pipes and electrics running underneath. The extra fixing will really hold the board in place. No movement, no noise.
