How To Floss Teeth
Make oral hygiene your priority. Watch VideoJug's short guide showing you the correct way to floss your teeth. This is a great start to healthier gums and overall better dental hygiene, so learn how to floss teeth the VideoJug way.
Step 1: When to floss
You should floss your teeth after you've brushed them, but only once a day. Brushing removes the bacteria and food particles from the surfaces of the teeth, but to get between the teeth, you need to floss.
Step 2: Get some floss
Break off about 45cm of floss. Wind the ends around each of your index fingers, leaving about 10 centimetres of slack between them.
Step 3: Now floss
Gently guide the floss between the teeth, using a rubbing motion. Don't snap it in to place.
When the floss reaches the gum line curve the floss against one of the teeth, and slide it between the tooth and the gum.
When you feel resistance gently take the floss away from the tooth
Step 4: Wind on
Each time you've finished a tooth, wind the used floss around one finger and release another 10 centimetres of slack from the other. Now move on and floss the next section of your teeth.
Step 5: Don't forget the back
You should always floss behind the back teeth too.
If you haven't been flossing, your gums may bleed a little at first. If this doesn't stop, contact your dentist right away.
Tips & Comments
you should brush first, then floss, then brush again superficialy (one stroke on each tooth).
i normally floss first, then brush
OK, but I don't understand one thing - first floss, then brush or first brush then floss.
i have real difficulty flossing, because the floss cant slide between the gaps (my teeth are too tight together?!)..the floss shreds up
If you are having problems with bleeding gums then you should really be looking at getting a toothbrush such as the sonicare flexcare. You can read reviews on this brush on www.howtobrushyourteeth.co.uk This brush is guaranteed to improve your oral hygiene. You will still have to floss your mouth though.
this is wrong
Thanks so much.
Kudos to the BDA for the oral self-care videos. In the US we teach patients to wrap the floss around their middle fingers. Of course, we don't change anybody's technique if they are doing a good job of flossing. I think your film would be improved by showing a shorter piece of floss being inserted between the teeth. The longer the span between the fingers the easier it is to snap the floss between the teeth and down onto the gums (ouch). We emphasize a back and forth motion to ease the floss between the teeth, then wrapping around the side of one tooth and wiping up and down 3 - 6 times or until one hears a squeak. Then wrap the floss around the side of the adjacent tooth and repeat wiping up and down. When the young lady is removing the floss from between her teeth, she should slide the floss back and forth (same direction as when she inserted the floss) to avoid popping the floss out from between the teeth (ouch). All that said, these are videos I will recommend to my patients. Anything to get them flossing.
Great video!
