Three core elements we're going to look at, in terms of weight gain, we're going to look at nutrition, exercise, and your mind-set around it and your mentality. Nutrition - it's got to be good. You've got to have good, high quality nutrition, high quality protein sources, meat and fish, making sure that you get the nutrition that you need from other sources as well, a good range of fresh fruit, vegetables, salads.

In order to grow and put on weight, then your body really needs the building blocks to be able to do that. And that's about good quality nutrition, good quality protein, and other vitamins and minerals your body needs to build your cells and grow new tissue. If you're looking to add fat, rather than add muscle, then obviously you want to increase your calorie intake a little bit, and make sure that you're eating enough calories, enough food each day.

To be able to have that, be more than the amount of calories you're expending in order to gain weight. Obviously, the bigger that gap is, the faster you're going to gain weight so if you're having an extra hundred calories per day versus an extra thousand, that's going to make a big difference to the rate at which you're going to put on weight. But really, most people are aiming to put on muscle rather than fat, so then it's about doing the right kind of exercise and matching that with your nutrition.

So, it's really about weight training, using heavier weights if you want to do it faster, you want to be doing strength training, and muscle-building training, rather than endurance training. So, heavier weights, slower repetitions, six, eight or ten repetitions, nice and slowly! Also if you're doing cardiovascular exercise, you want to be doing high intensity sprints into the work, rather than long duration, on-going aerobic exercise. So, think about things like sprints, a thirty-second sprint, maximum intensity, ninety-second rest.

Repeat that eight to ten times, five-minute warm-up, five-minute cool-down. That'll really help to stimulate your metabolism, human growth hormone, the sort of things that your body is going to need to gain weight rather than lose it. Do that two or three times a week.

Focus on your body image and your mindset around that, get a really strong positive healthy relationship with your body, so that you're not looking at yourself in the mirror and not being happy with how you look all the time. Genetics play a part, there's only so much you can achieve, so make sure you've got a healthy relationship with your body and how you look. So, good luck.
