Step 1: You will need
- A budget, a drivers licence, and a good eye for detail.
Step 2: Choose a car
Pick a car that suits your needs. Ask yourself a few questions: Are you looking for space or pace, are you planning it for long journeys, or just a run around.
Step 3: Research
This is the most important step in getting a good deal on a new car. Ring around find out what other dealerships are offering in the UK. This will be your best bargaining tool. Ring the out of the way dealership and quote the offer they give you over the phone, to your local dealer, they may decide to match it.
Step 4: Part Exchange
Many dealerships offer a part exchange where they will give you an offer for your present car if you buy a new car with them. Work out the entire deal i.e. if they offer you £5,000 for your old car and the new car costs £10,000, you only need £5,000. The next dealership may offer you more for your old car but the new car is more expensive i.e. they give you £8,000 but the new car costs £14,000 meaning you need £6,000 for a new car. Remember look at the whole deal not just the part exchange.
Step 5: Special Promotions
Always ask if there are special promotions. A car dealer may offer free insurance or air conditioning or even free satellite navigation. Ask what finance deals they have too.
Step 6: Special Edition
Manufacturers will produce a special edition offer that has extra features and is often cheaper. You may get electric windows and a cd player free.
Step 7: Negotiate
If you've done your homework and sound like you know what you're talking about you will be more successful in the negotiating ring.
Sales people have quarterly targets and are more likely to give reductions at the end of March, June, September or December.
Remember the higher the price of the vehicle the higher the margin.
