Looking for tips to improve your career and start climbing the ladder of progression? Here is the video that gives you all that you might need to know about getting a promotion and going up your career line.
Today, I'm talking to you about how to get a promotion. Not always as easy as you might think. In today's world, the job market has changed so much that, you know, the job for life and kind of getting into a company, working for them for even five, fifteen and twenty years, working your way up the ladder isn't really the way it works anymore.
It just doesn't. Companies don't think that way, loyalty is gone. So, you really need to be a little bit more selfish, little bit more kind of purposeful and almost ruthless at times if you want to get promoted and make your way up your career ladder.
The obvious one of working hard and doing a good job, obviously, we all need to do that. But there are some other things you need to focus on as well. This is a two-piece puzzle, like are you looking to get promoted internally within the company you're in or are you looking to get promoted externally? Are you looking to kind of go up to the next level, but you are going to do it by moving to another company? Opting for the latter will accelerate your career progress faster.
It depends a little bit on the company you're working for and what that kind of attitude is to kind of accelerate in people's career progress and promoting. But if you're finding it hard to get promoted within, don't stay too long. Don't stagnate your progress.
Really focus on looking other opportunities outside your organization, couple of other things that can be really important as you go higher up the ladder. The skills that you need will change. So, you're going to need to develop more leadership skills, team skills to be able to do the job effectively, or further higher up you go, the sort of role that you're going to be required to fulfill is going to require more people skills and less technical ability in your specialist area.
Also, then, for job interviews, for annual reviews, you're going to need to really develop some strong negotiating skills. So, make sure that you're kind of getting that kind of salaries and promotions on jobs that you want. Also, another base is really about networking.
Inside your organization, find out who your key influences are around the company. Building a strong relationship with your boss is absolutely essential. Remember, bosses, you know, don't want more than two cold things really.
They want great results and they want an easy life. So, focus on making sure you give your boss those two things. Really think about networking relationships as a key part of your kind of career development strategy.
Also, you know, get out a network outside of your company. So, if you're looking to jump ship and move somewhere else, then you've got contacts and people that you can kind of call on to help, make that process faster and easier. And, focus on, you know, regularly reviewing your career, writing down results you've achieved, both tangible and intangible.
So, for your CV for annual reviews, for job interviews, you've got really clear demonstration of points about what it is that you can do, what is the difference you can make for that company. And lastly, but not least, is mindsets, attitude. You know, you get that when going places, attitude without being arrogant and cocky.
Really be able to engage with people when you're negotiating for new jobs or for promotions. So, good luck! It's tough out there, but you can do it with the right skills.
