How To Get Emergency Contraception
How To Get Emergency Contraception: If you've had unprotected sex you may need to consider taking emergency contraception. This film brought to you by VideoJug will show you how to get emergency contraception and what to do with it once you do.
-
Step 1:
-
The emergency pill
-
The emergency pill is similar to the regular contraceptive pill, but contains a stronger dose of the hormones used to prevent pregnancy. It works by delaying or preventing ovulation, and may also stop a fertilised egg from implanting in the wall of the womb. You must take the emergency pill as soon as you get it, and definitely within 72 hours of having sex, otherwise it will not work. If you vomit after taking it, you'll need to take another dose. In some people it can cause nausea, and may delay your next period.
-
Step 2:
-
The emergency IUD
-
The emergency Intra-Uterine Device (IUD) is like a regular IUD but it's inserted up to 5 days after unprotected sex. It's thought to prevent pregnancy by stopping a fertilised egg from implanting into the wall of the uterus. The emergency IUD can be removed after your next period, provided you haven't had unprotected sex again. You'll need to see a doctor to have it removed.

Step 3:
-
Where to go
-
You can get the emergency contraceptive pill from any pharmacy, and the pharmacist should be able to help you with this.
The emergency IUD can only be put in by a doctor, so you should go and talk to them for further information.
