How To Get Good At Omaha Hi Lo
Interested in playing poker? Want to become a better gambler? Then you may want to investigate Omaha Hi Lo, an exciting Texas Hold 'Em-esque variation of the classic poker game!
Let's have a little look at Omaha Hi Lo. Now, this video is on Videojug, you can see about how to play Omaha, but the Hi Lo is slightly different. On one side, you've got Hi, which is the standard variant of Omaha where you are trying to make the best possible five card hand of the four cards you've got with the five cards on board.
Remember, unlike Texas Hold 'Em, you have to use two cards from your hand, okay? You have to use two cards. With Hi Lo, there's also the possibility of making a Lo hand, so let's look at this particular board. So these are the five community cards being dealt out, okay? Now, because there are three cards, there are eight or under, okay? Three cards or eight or under, they're not paired, a low hand will qualify.
So, basically you're looking for five cards, non-pairing, between an eight and an ace. That makes the low hand. So in this particular situation, the best possible low hand, in any low game, is called the wheel, which is ace, deuce, three, four, one, two, three, four, five, so this guy over here has got two threes in his hand, so he has the nut-low, okay? So, ace, deuce, three, four, five, makes the wheel and that's the nut-low, and if there's a pot of say, fifty pounds, or five thousand chips, he would receive half of this pot because he has half of this particular hand.
Now, this player over here has the nut-high hand which is the ace, queen of clubs, or any ace bit of clubs which means he's got the nut flush which is five of the same suits. So, basically, he's got the nut flush, he wins half the pot. They win half the pot.
I'm not trying to complicate things here, but there are situations which arise when, even though you've got the nut-low, you only receive, say, a quarter of the pot, and this is how it would work out. The ace/queen has got the nut-flush; she's five of the same suit, okay? Also, the other part of this hand is two, three, okay, which means he also has the nut-low, so he would win half of the pot because that's a tenner, he would win five pounds. But also, there's the nut low as well and he would win half of that pot as well.
So, this guy would end up with seven pounds fifty. For example, this one would only earn two pounds fifty, being what is called in Hi Lo, three-quartered. So, what you're looking for in a good Hi Lo starting hand are two aces deuce three, ace deuce three four, double ace king queen, you know, either high or low, you don't want eights, sevens, nines, middling cards are not really going to do you any favors.
And that basically is Hi Lo. .
