Today, I'm talking to you about how to get promoted. Not always as easy as you'd like it to be, so I'm going to focus on a few key areas that you need to pay attention to if you want to increase your chances of getting promotions that you want at work. The first one is the most obvious one, it's the one we're all kind of conditioned and brought up with, which is work hard and do a good job.
Absolutely, you need to do that if you want to get promoted, but that on itself often isn't enough as many, many people who work hard, do a great job for their company and don't seem to go anywhere. So we're going to talk about some of the other elements that really make a difference in accelerating your career progress. Firstly, I'd encourage you to make sure that you actually sit down and review your own progress and the results you've got in your work at least every six months - ideally, every three months.
So, do your own little mini job review on your own. What have I achieved in the last three months? What results have I got? Be specific with tangibles. If you've managed to increase productivity by 10%, write that down.
If you've brought in 500,000 pounds worth of business, write that down. It's all about having tangible results as well as things you've achieved that aren't tangible and working hard. The next element is to start to really network within your organization and build relationships.
One of the keys to getting promoted is getting on well and being well thought of by the people that you work for and around, but particularly the people you work for. And that's not just "so and so does a great job", but it's actually like, "Wow!" Building relationships are very important. If you don't get along well with your boss, the chances of getting promoted are very, very slim.
So building a strong relationship with your boss is absolutely essential, but also other key influences in the organization. It's almost like being a small business within this large organization, you actually need to get out there and market yourself with the right people if you want to make those career jumps. You've heard the saying, I'm sure, "It's not about what you know, but who you know".
It's actually both, but the "who you know" bit is really, really important. Lastly but by no means least, there are some skills I really recommend that you focus on developing. The first one is your leadership skills and your ability to lead a team and people.
The higher you move up in an organization, the less often your role will become about the specific technical skills that you have and the more it will become about leadership and managing and leading people. So, absolutely, you need to develop those skills. The next one is negotiating skills.
In those job interviews, in those annual reviews, you really need to be able to negotiate strongly and know what you're trying to achieve. So, really focus on developing and building your negotiating skills and finally, your influencing skills. Really developing, it kind of ties into the leadership piece, the ability to influence people around you.
Get focused on what it is that you want and building the relationships with the people and demonstrating the results you've got for the organization to get the promotion that you want.
