How To Get Rid Of Acid Reflux

Indigestion is a common problem to every human being. This video helps you to understand the causes and also simple steps to improve your indigestion symptoms.

Hello I'm Dr.Gemma Newman, I'm a GP and broadcaster and today I'd like to help you with a few top tips to improve your health. I'd like to talk to you today about how to get rid of indigestion.

Now indigestion is a really common symptom with a number of causes. So, firstly I'd like to talk to you about what symptoms you might have and then a little bit about the causes. So with indigestion you are likely to have a pain in the upper abdomen, you are likely to have a feeling of burning sometimes in the chest, bloating, burping symptoms, a feeling of being full after having a very small amount to eat, and sometimes also feeling sick or vomiting.

Now these symptoms can come in bouts, they often do and they are also slightly worse at night when you are lying down flat. Okay, so what can the causes be of indigestion? Well, the number one cause is acid reflux. And that's where the acid from the stomach lining comes back up into the food pipe or esophagus and makes it sore.

other causes would include bacteria that can live in the stomach and make you more likely to produce more stomach acids. This bacteria is called H pylori and you need to go and see your GP for a diagnosis. What they would do is either a blood test or stool sample or a breath test to help you to diagnose that problem.

what else might cause indigestion? well ulcers, ulcers in the stomach,or in the small intestine can also make you feel that you have indigestion. Hiatus hernia, is another cause, that's where your stomach pushes up through the diaphragm and causes symptoms of again the acid coming up into the food type. Medicines can sometimes cause indigestion so it is really important to look at what you might be taking.

Now if you are not taking any regular medicines from your doctor, you may be taking something over the counter like ibuprofen or another anti inflammatory or sometimes aspirin. These can all cause irritation to the stomach lining and best avoided if you are getting indigestion. Lastly diet can play a big part in indigestion as well.

It is important to have a really healthy diet to reduce your risk of acid coming up into the food pipe. Now there are a few worrying problems that can cause indigestion and certain forms of cancers as well. So, if you have other symptoms things like black poo or blood in your vomit, or weight loss or difficulty in swallowing, or if you are found to be anemic, it is important to go and see your own doctor for advice and for diagnosis.

OK so we have covered those. Now let's talk about what the treatments will be. Now if it is on and off and it is not happening very often you can get over the counter remedies to ease your indigestion.

So number one would be some antacid tablets that you can buy from your pharmacy. You could also try an acid suppressing tablet from your doctor.This will improve the amount of acid that your stomach produces.

You could try another type of medication called a pro kinetic medication from your doctor which will reduce any belching component that you have. The other simple remedies would include things like peppermint tea for bowel spasm this may also help to improve indigestion associated with belching or bloating. Now the most important thing I can tell you on this video is your diet.

You have to pay close attention to what you are eating. Now it's sensible to avoid any triggers for indigestion. These things could include spicy foods,caffeine, may be fatty foods, alcohol and obviously smoking as well.

If you are overweight then weight loss may help you too. Posture can be important as can tight clothing so if you are getting indigestion it might be worth loosening that belt a little bit. Other things you can try is perhaps eating earlier on in the day.

The later you eat the more likely you are to get indigestion especially if you are going to be lying down or going to bed any time soon after eating. Therefore I would also advice you to avo
