So, today, we are going to talk about how to get rid of bad breath. Now, the medical term for bad breath is halitosis and it's something that most of us worry about and most of us are affected by at some point in our lives. In fact, nearly all of us wake up with bad breath in the morning and the reason for that is that during the night, our mouth tends to dry out because we produce less saliva and also the digestive food stuffs that are stuck inside our mouth, they are being worked on by bacteria and their waste products can cause really smelly breath.

It kind of depends on what foods we eat, certain foods can cause us to have bad breath, for example, onions or broccoli or cabbage and certainly alcohol can cause bad breath. And also, things like Kippers can cause bad breath for prolonged periods, because the breakdown of those products by our body are actually expelled in our breath for much longer than we might imagine. The commonest cause of bad breath over all is periodontal hygiene and gum disease.

And a good way of knowing if you might have gum disease is if you, when you brush your teeth, you notice some bleeding from your gums. Bad breath from periodontal hygiene is caused by plaque and plaque is the sticky film of bacteria which is found at the junction between our teeth and our gums. And it could be quite difficult to shift that by brushing your teeth on your own.

Those bacteria are working on food stuffs and they excrete waste products and that's what gives us a really smelly odor on our breath. If you've noticed any plaque or you do have any bleeding gums, it's really important to go to your dentist or dental hygienist and get some advice on how to manage that. One thing you can do is use some mints, which can temporarily improve your bad breath, but overall it's really important to look at your dental hygiene and see what you can do to improve it.

One good tip is to brush your tongue and that would clear any furring or bacteria stuck at the back there, which again can cause smelly and malodorous breath. And of course, it's important for all of us to brush our teeth twice a day and to floss regularly. Using mouthwashes has been scientifically proven to improve bad breath, but after about 2 to 3 weeks of using mouthwashes regularly.

So, I would use them twice a day and see if things improve after a fortnight or so. I'd look out for ones you can buy over the counter that'll include Chlorhexidine, which can really improve things and also ones which may be have a pleasant odor.
