How To Get Rid Of Ingrown Hairs

Ingrown hairs are a nuisance to just about anyone who deals with shaving on a regular basis. In this video, get advice on how to prevent and treat those pesky ingrown hairs.

Normally they occur as a result of shaving, and when the skin gets constant irritation then the skin overlying gets thicker and often it's dry as well and that makes it difficult for the hair to come through. So instead of coming through like it ought to, it's not strong enough so it basically grows sideways under the skin. The best way to get rid of them, or to avoid them, is to have some sort of permanent hair removal such as IPL or to wax instead of shaving.

However, if you do need to shave then I'd recommend exfoliating regularly, at least every one to two days and moisturizing as well to prevent the skin being dry and to prevent the skin overlying becoming thick. Also, if you use a moisturizing lotion with aloe vera in it, there's a company called Forever that does moisturizing lotion with a high amount of aloe vera in it and that actually acts as a natural anti-inflammatory to reduce the irritation and again avoid that thickening of the skin. It's your skin's response to try and protect itself from later trauma.

If you do have an ingrown hair, it usually ends up growing out of it's own accord. Some times it can get infected, because the body thinks it's a foreign body, it's not meant to be there, so it tries to mount an immune response to it and you can get puss and it can be quite sore. It might need antibiotics.

If you're feeling very brave, you can get a sterile needle, and if you can see the hair just under the surface you can actually just go very superficially and use the needle to just pry out the ingrown hair, but it's not for the faint-hearted. I hope this has been useful in helping you prevent and treat ingrown hairs and thank you for listening.
