As the nights start getting shorter in autumn and the lights come on at dusk, every household in the country will start having the occasional moths coming in through open windows. However, we call them in pest control casual intruders, they're not a pest problem, there's not a lot that can be done about them, they're only coming in because it's warm and they're attracted to the light. However, in your kitchen, if you open a kitchen cupboard and you see small, about a centimetre long slow-moving moths, walking more than flying, then you may have a problem, they're what we call store products moths, they could be called flour moths, rice moths, there's a variety of different ones that affect different products.
Now, what you need to do is go to the back of your cupboard, find all those out of date products that nearly every household keeps in there. It may be dried soups, it may be an old of flour open it, you'll see that the flour is no longer light and fluffy but you may see some webbing in there and then if you start seeing little maggots crawling around in it, you know you've found the source of the problem. But what you really need to do is empty every product out of that cupboard clean the cupboard really well with bleach or other kitchen disinfectants.
Empty anything that is out of date, get rid of it quickly. Store product moths will always be found generally in food cupboards, occasionally you'll find them in stuffed toys which have been stuffed with things like lentils that may be the source of the problem, you really have to find the source of that problem. It's a hygiene issue, you can then start dealing with the adult moths by spraying them with an insecticide.
If the problem is going on, it may be more deep seated, there may be other food products around, even dried flowers they may be feeding on. Textile moths, when it comes to spring cleaning, the one time of year that you move your settees away from the edge of the wall or you move a bureau or something that has been sitting on a carpet for a long time and the horror that affects you as you start seeing holes in your prized bit of woollen carpet, that's an indication that textile moths are around. Now, textile moth is not the moth that does the damage.
They're very similar to other kinds of moth that do damage in a household and they're generally slow moving probably a buff colour. They walk rather than fly but it's the lava, the maggots that do the damage to the fabrics. You'll find them there, it may be when you open your wardrobe that you find your best cashmere has been eaten apart, it really needs you to carry out better cleaning, move your furniture on a more frequent basis than just once a year spring cleaning.
When your stuff's in a wardrobe or a drawer, turn it over once every five or six weeks to stop the moths or to find them very early on, before they start doing the damage, once you've found them, any clothing, it can be dry cleaned. That's a good method of pest control and then you may need to have the drawer sprayed with a residual insect spray. It may be that there's birds nest in the loft because some of the textile moths will breed in birds nest and, of course, sometimes our carpet gets stored in those places.
If that's the case, then you need to start searching a lot more deeply for the source of the problem. If you can't find it yourself and the problem continues, that's when you need to get a professional pest control company such as Clean Kill and we will get to the root of the problem for you.
