Red mites are a huge problem in the poultry business and are not easy to deal with. This video has practical advice on how to find it there is a problem and find where they are hidden, so you can cure your chicken of parasites.
We're going to talk about chickens and their mites, and we're going to focus at the moment on red mites, which is a huge problem within the poultry community. All chickens are prone to it, they do not live on the birds and very unlikely, you will see them in the birds. They live in the houses, in the cranks and crevices, so you need to really check your houses, to have a good look around.
One of the first signs that your chickens have got red mite – one, they will become anaemic and then their crowns on the top of their heads will start to look really pale and they will be reluctant to get to bed because that's where the mites are and they will be coming out to feed there at night. They spend a couple of hours feeding on the blood of your chickens and can do them some serious damage. So, you need to check your houses regularly and thoroughly.
Pinning a white cloth up in your roof at night will give you an indication, you can check that cloth in the morning and if there are any of this horrible little bug zones. They are tiny, like a pinhead, they are grey and red, if they have to feed, then you know you got them, and you'll have to take actions with either chemical which you can buy, smoke forms are very good, treat the bird, as well as give them a tonic just to give them a fighting chance of getting their immunity up again. Plateau is very well but health city says be careful.
What else, Vaseline smidge on the legs of chicken will stop the mites walking up their legs and don't have to feed on them. This is one of the many tips derived from my book, The Essential Guide to Choosing and Keeping Happy and Healthy Hens..
