How To Get Rid Of Silverfish

This VideoJug film gives tips on how to identify and get rid of silverfish in your home. It describes what silverfish looks like, what they feed on, where they prefer to live and how to get rid of them.

One of the common insects that people often see in either their kitchens or their bathrooms is a little insect called the silverfish, and it's probably about a centimeter, just over a centimeter long, a long submarine shaped body, rounded at one end, tapering to the other end, often with three almost antennae-looking things coming out of its back end and these are silverfish. We don't class them as public health pests in the same way as cockroaches and many of the other insects. They're more one of nature's vacuum cleaners, because they'll be living on little scraps of food that get pushed underneath skirting boards, certainly in the kitchens and they're perfectly happy feeding there.

However, if they build up into larger numbers, of course, if you've got young children, and ladies will often be distressed by seeing insects such as these crawling around in their lovely, pristine kitchen. The way to get rid of them, general hygiene measures, dusting, getting a dustpan and brush underneath the skirting board, hovering under the skirting board, hovering around the edges of the fridges, the cookers, other things in the kitchen to remove any little scraps of food that may be there that these insects could feed on. In a bathroom, again, they'll be living off maybe scraps of skin that have gone under, maybe even toenails and things like that, that will give them a nice, little, high protein feed, and they'll love the dampness and humidity of the bathroom.

Again, general hovering, general hygiene and cleaning will help in control of these insects. If they build up to larger numbers, then a residual crawling insect spray, all around the edges of the skirting boards, down the side of the fridges, down the sides of the cooker will help get rid of the problem. If the problem then continues, and it's a bit more deep seated, then that's when you may need the help of a pest control company, such as CleanKill, to come in and help you get rid of silverfish.
