How To Get Rid Of Squirrels

This VideoJug film will give you all the information you need to know about how to get rid of squirrels to prevent them from getting in your garden or loft.

Hello, my name is Graham Selleck, I am the proprietor of Sabre Environmental Properties Services. We are pest controllers based in Watford Hertfordshire. We are there for all your pest control needs.

I am now going to talk about the control of grey squirrels in and around the home. Squirrels cause massive problems if they find or enter into loft space. They chew electrical wiring.

They chew pipe insulation and plastic pipes. I know one ocassion when they caused the house to be gutted in a fire because the wiring had been chewed by a grey squirrel. Grey squirrels were an introduced species to the UK, they originate from the Americas, and they have quite a high breeding success.

They have two liters a year with between three and seven kittens, as the young are called. So, we can't allow squirrels free run of our lofts as I've explained, and they will also do damage in your garden. The main way we catch squirrels is using something like this which is called a cage trap.

Bait is placed inside the trap, the squirrel enters, presses on this trevel here, which fires the door and traps the squirrel. As an introduced specie, it's then not allowed by law to release the squirrel, it has to be humanly destroyed. This is a cage trap, now this is a lethal trap, this is called the fen or springer mark four trap which is an approved trap by the Administry of Agriculture, or Defra as it is now, for squirrels.

The trap is set so when the squirrel treads on the central trigger, this fires the trap which gives a good clean kill on the squirrel. If this trap is used out of doors to protect fruit or growing timber, it must be fixed in an approved tunnel. This one is made to the Forestry Commissions specifications.

The trap is placed inside, obviously set, the tunnel is placed over it and then weight is applied to the top of the tunnel to prevent any non-target species from entering and getting caught on the trap. Squirrels eat young birds, they strip bugs off of growing timber, they strip bark off of growing timber. They are significant pests in the UK but these are the methods that can be used to control them in or around the garden. .
