So let's talk about how to get rid of sunburn. Well, sunburn is something that happens when our skin is exposed to ultra-violet radiation from sun rays, and it's an acute inflammatory response. So basically, what happens is our skin gets very red, gets very hot, can be really tender, and it can be quite a wide-spread inflammation of the skin.
You're particularly prone to sunburn if you've got light skin and fair hair, but any of us can be affected if we stay in the sun for prolonged periods, particularly around the middle part of the day. So what can we do to manage sunburn? Well, first of all, it's important to apply some cool soaks to the sunburned skin. This will relieve the discomfort and also reduce the temperature of the skin.
You should use some simple pain killers if there's any discomfort or irritation, there. And you can use some Paracetamol or some over the counter pain killers like Ibuprofen. Also, it's really important not to go back out into the sun, because this can make sunburn worse, and can make it much more uncomfortable.
In terms of preventing sunburn, there's a couple of things we can all do. Some of the very simple methods are to slop on the sun cream, slip on a shirt, and slap on a hat, any time we go into the sun. These methods will protect us against the sun's rays and make sure we don't get affected by sunburn.
The most important of those is probably to slap on the sun cream, and it's really important to use a high factor, particularly if you're light skinned and fair haired. If you've got a child with you, or a baby, then it's really important to use a high factor for them as well, and I definitely recommend over a factor twenty-five for any children and babies. Also, when we're out in the sun, it's really important to drink plenty of fluids and keep well hydrated.
So if you've got some sunburn, do remember it usually takes a few days to resolve and improve. And the top layer of skin is dead, so it will peel off after a few days and the skin underneath might be a little bit tender, so continue to use cooling soaks and soothing lotions to improve the skin there. And that's some tips on how to manage sunburn.
