Hiccups are a common problem which affects all people at some point in their lives. They can be uncomfortable, annoying, and if they happen in the wrong place, hiccups can be quite embarrassing. Learn how to get rid of them once and for all in this short tutorial taught by Dr. Ranj Singh.
In this video, we are going to talk about how to get rid of hiccups. Now, hiccups are caused by a rapid, involuntary contraction of the diaphragm muscle in the chest, and it results in that characteristic hickĀ sound up in the upper airway. Nobody really knows what causes hiccups but they are seldom harmful.
Very, very occasionally, they are associated with an underlying condition, but fortunately this is rare. They tend to only last for a short period of time and are quite easy to deal with unless you have an underlying medical problem that is causing them, in which case, you may need specialist help. Persistent hiccups can be related to an underlying condition such as reflux, gastroenteritis, diabetes, side effects of medicals and also psychological causes.
Fortunately, there are some fairly simple things you can do at home to try and get rid of hiccups if they are problematic. 1. Try sipping a cup of water slowly.
2. Try holding your breath for a short period of time. 3.
Gentle pressure on the nose while swallowing may help. 4. Gentle pressure on your chest at the level of the diaphragm may also help.
5. Try gargling with some cold water. 6.
Try pulling your knees up to your chest and holding them there. And finally, number seven, try leaning forward to compress the chest. As I said, the vast majority of hiccups are short-lived and are not serious at all.
But if you think you have an underlying medical problem, then always seek medical advice. If that is the case, there is some medication available to help those people. And that is how we can all treat hiccups at home.
