Whoever gave you the gift may give you a clear solution to your dilemma by offering you the receipt. This is most common with clothing. It is ok to accept this as long as you do it in a polite manner. When a well-meaning friend gives you a jumper that you know you will never wear, tell her that the fit is not quite right or you'd prefer a different colour. This way she will not be offended or think you didn't appreciate the gift. Accept the receipt and exchange the item for something you will get more use out of.

Regifting is the somewhat risky practice of giving away unwanted gifts to other people as gifts. You should only ever regift presents that are brand new and have never been used. Anything homemade or one of a kind should never be regifted. Remove personalised wrapping or gift tags that could give away any clues as to where the gift came from. Never regift among the same group of friends as it is likely the person who gave you the gift will find out.

Auction websites like eBay are saviours for people who are desperate to get rid of unwanted presents. The odds are that if you don't want it, someone else will. Not only can you offload your awful gifts onto others, but you could also turn the kindness of your nearest and dearest into a profit.

If you're in a more charitable mood, donate your unwanted gifts to a charity shop. They can find a good home with someone who will appreciate them and the money will go to a good cause.

Step 6: Swap them for better stuff

If you'd still like to get something out of the presents you don't want, trade gifts with a friend. Get together after Christmas and swap items of similar value. You could both finally receive a gift you really want this Christmas.
