In this video, a baby expert talks about giving birth at home. What is it like to do so, what are the advantages and what are some of the myths that still persist about giving birth in your own home environment.
Hi, I'm Laura Campbell from Babyladies and I'm going to be giving you some tips on how to look after your newborn and how to achieve the birth that you want. I'm going to talk about giving birth at home and how to give birth at home. It's actually really exciting to even be considering it.
And there's only 2% in the UK at the moment that do consider giving birth at home. And that's a real shame, because it's a fantastic environment where you can do pretty much what you want. You can be in a position, when you're actually labouring.
You can be in a position that makes you feel comfortable. You're in familiar surroundings. You can have a snack or a cup of tea and it's your own brand of teabag.
So there's so many reasons why it's so lovely to give birth at home and you're comfortable. And the main thing about being relaxed, comfortable and happy in your own home environment is that once you're relaxed your brain's producing oxytocin, the hormone that just makes birth easier. It makes everything relaxed, and baby's able to come out a lot more, a lot more smoothly.
So, giving birth at home is slightly different and you do need to plan for it if it's something that you really, really feel strongly about. A midwife is going to support you 100%. And it means that you will have, maybe one, maybe two, usually two midwives present at birth.
And it's a really lovely experience and a very special one and the midwives will be absolutely thrilled to be part of it. Some people worry, giving birth at home is a really messy experience, it's this, it's that, it's the other. T'here are so many stories that you'll hear from your parents and from their grandparents about, okay, during the 1950s, there was a massive campaign about getting people into hospitals because of infection.
Obviously, we're now thinking that maybe hospitals aren't the best place because they have infections. So it's whatever suits you, don't be swayed by parents or grandparents and fears and thoughts of other people. It's got to be something that you really want to do.
Don't worry about the mess! Because a midwife will come with sheets, everything is cleared up, everything's lovely and you're in your own bed with your newborn baby. .
