How To Glaze A Pot
Once you have made your pot, you will want to glaze it to give it a colourful, shinny finish. In this Videojug guide professional potter Ricky Grimes talks you through two different glazing techniques you can try at home.
You Will Need
- terracotta pot
- white tin glaze
- bucket
- brush
- earthenware brush on glaze
Method
Mix the white tin glaze in the bucket with your hand until all the lumps have disappeared. Hold the bowl with two fingers on the bottom, and one around the rim, then dip it into the glaze, and lift it out to drip. The glaze will dry into the clay very quickly. You can drop a little bit of glaze to the gap in the rim where your thumb was.
When the glaze is dry, wipe the glaze off the foot ring using a wet sponge. You need to remove the glaze from the part of the bowl which will be in contact with the kiln shelf as the glaze melts and solidifies in the kiln, so will stick the bowl down if the bottom is glazed.
The other way to apply glaze to a pot is to use a product called a brush on glaze. You can get these glazes suitable for all different temperatures. Give the jar a good shake, then apply two or three thick coats to whatever you are glazing.
