Hi, this is Mike, Snowboard Coach at the Hemel Hempstead Snow Centre. So, today, we're going to explain how to do a grind. Now, in snowboarding terms, there isn't really a term, "grind".

But, grinding can mean various, different things. In snowboarding terms, it's more chipping. Or, a grind as such, would be a 50/50 on a rail, which is basically just keeping your board flat and going straight over the object, whether it is a box, or a rail, or doing a board slide on a little mound of snow, or something like that.

So, that, probably is what a grind is. So, a grind is, in snowboarding terms, "chipping". I'm going to show you how to do a grind.

This particular grind is called a 50/50, where you just keep the board nice and flat, and you're just going straight over the object. This object is just a flat box - a ride-on flat box - nice and easy for beginners. So, what you want to do is have a look at the speed that people are approaching the box.

So, I would say, from about here, once you're strapped in, you just want to drop in straight. So, no speed checks. So, you just drop in here, you're just coming in straight all the way, keeping the board nice and flat all the way.

And then when you get onto the box, keeping it nice and flat. Soak it up. Bend your knees slightly.

Look in to the end of the box. So, 50/50 grind, straight off - and then what you want to do is just pop a little Ollie, sucking your knees up, landing it flat, bending your knees, and then just riding away. And that's how you do a grind.
