How To Grow Green Onions
With the help of this VideoJug film, you can soon start growing your own green onions. This video provides useful step-by-step advice on how to plant and grow onions from seed.
Today, I'm going to show you how to grow onions from seed. Whenever sowing seeds, always follow the instructions on the packet. Onion seeds are usually grown in the spring.
First, prepare the seed bed. This is a seed bed here, and we need to make sure there's a nice, fine filth on it, and there are no big lumps of soil protruding. Next, I'm going to make a drill, which is like a little ditch that I'm going to sow the onion seeds in.
There you go; there's a little drill. I then take the onion seeds out of the packet, put some in my hand, and I've got to try and sow them as thinly as I can, about one centimetre deep, three or four centimetres apart, if I can. Sometimes, the seeds of onions are so small that you can't handle them individually like this and you need to just sprinkle them along the row, like this.
But, if the seeds are big enough, like the ones I've got here, you can actually pick them up individually, and put them down the drill at even spacings. Then, cover the seeds up that you've just planted, like this, and then water them in. And if you've used tiny little seeds that you were unable to put into the drill individually, you need to thin them out now.
So, here are some that I planted a few weeks ago, and as you can see, they're much too close together. If you want nice, big onions, you need to have a nice spacing between each one. If you want large onions, then you need to thin the seedlings to about ten centimetres between each onion.
You can do them, you can leave a smaller gap if you don't mind the onions being a bit smaller. So, that's how you grow onions from seed. .
