Today, I'm going to talk to you about adding some drama to your garden, with a plant like Sambucus Nigra is absolutely gorgeous. They flower, sort of springtime, from about May - June onwards and have lovely ambles of white flowers. The foliage, as you can see, is fantastic, dark, feathery, almost black foliage.

Although these plants are deciduous, which means they're going to lose their leaves during the winter, they make such a statement during the summer months that they really are worth having in the garden. They're also very easy to grow. Dig a hole twice the width of the pot that the plant is in already and then, put in some nice organic matter in with the soil that you've dug out of the hole, place your plant back in the hole, and backfill with your mixture of soil and organic matter.

Make sure that you firm in and that there is no air pockets around the root bowl. This can lead to the roots drying out in certain areas and part of the plants off. Also, it can lead to disease and all sorts of problems.

You can cut Sambucus back quite hard as well, come autumn time, because they can have a tendency to get rather large, so again, they're an ideal plant for a small or a large garden because you can control whether you want it to make a really big statement or to just have some color in the order. And that's how you grow Sambucus.
