How To Gut A Fish

There's plenty of things in a fish that you don't want to eat! This video demonstrates the necessary techniques behind getting a freshly caught fish ready for roasting or even turning it into a couple of tasty fillets.

You Will Need

  • 1 fish
  • 1 knife

Method

Start by opening the gut. Insert your knife in the anus and cut open all the way to the throat and pull the guts out, you may need to cut some bits towards the head to release them.

There is a blood like inside the body cavity which you can remove by pushing your finger along it or scraping it away with a blade. If you are filleting your fish you don't really have to remove it.

You can roast the fish whole as it is, or you can fillet it. To fillet it, cut down towards the head starting behind the fin, then cut along the spine and slice the fillet away. You can remove any bones left with pliers, or you can just cook it and let them fall out.
