How To Handle Collectible Comic Books
A modern $3.00 comic today, can become a vintage comic tomorrow. So if someone is kind enough to let you touch their comic book, you better know what you're doing. Watch the video to learn how to handle collectable comic books.
Step 1: Ask First
A collectible comic book is a prized possession. You should never grab another collector's comics. You need to ask permission to read it first, but don't beg.
Step 2: Clean Up
Always wash your hands before handling comics. Oil from your hands can penetrate pages and cause stains or even worse, cause the pages to turn translucent. So unless you're prepared for kid glove handling, you need to wash up.
Step 3: In Your Hands
Typically, a comic will come enclosed in a clear sheath with a cardboard backing. If the collector used tape to keep the sleeve closed, keep away from the tape. Or remove it completely. If you're not careful, you risk ripping the pages when you remove the comic from the sleeve.
Step 4: Lay And Leaf
Lay the comic on a flat surface. Keeping the back flat, will minimize stress to the staples and spine. If you read it in your hands, lay it on an open palm. Leaf through the book by carefully rolling or lightly flipping the pages with the thumb and forefinger of your other hand. Lightly touch the pages, laying them down gently on each other. Remember, comics are a piece of art.
Step 5: Time's Up
You have to put it back. Carefully insert the comic back into its bag or protective sleeve. The back of the comic should touch the white front of the acid-free backing and the cover should face out. Put the tape back on and you're ready to return.
With your mastery of careful handling, you can preserve your relationship with any book or owner.
