How To Harvest Your Own Chives
This video gives step-by-step instructions in growing and harvesting chives. One needs to follow all the steps correctly to grow the plant successfully.
Hi, my name is John from Growing Life, London, UK urban and indoor garden specialists, and today I am going to talk about how to harvest chives. When we harvest chive, obviously the first thing we need is a healthy chive plant to harvest from and secondly, a tool such as a good quality pair of trimming scissors, garden trimming scissors which we use to create a clean cut from the chive plant without damaging and tearing the end. Chives grown has also got insect repellent properties so it's very to grow alongside other plants.
Now, when we are harvesting the chive plants, we wanted to take from the outer leaves and when we need to harvest, we always leave a minimum of 5cm of the chive plant to allow it to grow back. This chive plant here has already started flowering so it's not the ideal time to actually harvest this plant. When you do see flowers like this, if the reason why you're growing and harvesting chive is to use, then we would simply remove the chives with the flowers and discourage the growth of further flowers.
Now, if you are going to use a harvested chive, before doing so, you want to wash it. This will remove any insect in soil as chive is a low growing plant and the chance of splash back from rain of soil and obviously insects also is quite high. My name is John from Growing Life, London, and that was a brief introduction on how to harvest chives. .
