How To Heat Baby's Milk In The Microwave: Get tips and advice on how to properly heat milk for a baby in a microwave.

Hi, I'm Jennipher Marshall Jenkinson, chairman of the UK microwave technologies association and author of the prize-winning cook book, Microwave Magic: The Art of 21st Century Cooking. Now, I'm going to show you how to heat milk to give to babies, in a microwave oven. I've got here a standard baby's milk bottle.

If you want to heat milk properly in the oven, just put enough milk in the container and then put it into the microwave. Don't ever put the lid on it! Heat it for a minimum amount of time, thirty seconds as the time. The baby only wants to have the milk warmed and not hot, it's just above blood temperature.

Anymore than that and it will be too hot for baby. Don't ever put the lid on the container, while it's in the microwave, because that creates a little bit of pressure. It heats the milk up too quickly.

Of course, the most important thing you need to do before you give the milk to baby is test it. Make sure that it's not too hot. Either by giving the bottle a shake, once you put the lid on it and tasting it yourself, or giving it a swirl round.

Milk that is too hot is actually very dangerous. If you were warming the milk in a sauce pan on top of a stove, it's automatic you give the bottle a shake and taste it. Often, people think its being heated in the microwave isn't needed.

It's exactly the same procedure as if you were warming it on the top of a stove. We've heated this milk for one minute. I'm just going to put the top on and give it a bit of a shake.

I could see then that that milk is warm, but not too hot. Test it thoroughly before you give it a baby. That's the most important thing.
