This video demonstrates the techniques of holding an American football for the execution of common actions such as throwing, running, and field goals.
In this video, I'm going to show you how to hold a football. You'll notice the hand position. That's very important.
He's got his fingers over the laces and his thumb on the back of the ball. When he holds the ball in the quarterback position, he wants to be holding it close to his chest. The reason for that is so that no one can knock it out easily.
When he's throwing the football, there always needs to be some air in between the ball and his palm. Another time you may need to hold the football is when you're holding it for a field goal. He's going to hold it for a field goal now.
The first thing he needs to do is identify where he's going to place the ball, and he'll do that by placing his finger on the ground. The other hand he'll hold out to the snapper to signal where to put the ball. When the ball is snapped, he'll move his other hand up, to meet the other hand with his thumb and forefingers together, and he'll catch the snap in the palm of his hand.
The next thing you need to do after catching the snap is to put it onto the ground. He'll do that, he'll put his index finger onto the top of the ball. He'll spin the ball so that the laces are facing downhill, and he'll remove his hand away so it can be kicked.
And that's how you hold a football for a kicker, and how you hold a football to throw. .
