How To Hold A Hockey Stick

Hi, my name is Kevin and I have been playing hockey for the last 15 years. I have played for East London Hockey Club. And today, I am going to talk to you about how to hold a hockey stick.

Essentially, the hockey stick is made of two sides. There is a flat edge and then a rounded side on the back. During the game of hockey, you would only use the flat front edge and occasionally the sides.

But we will talk a bit more about that in a different episode. Essentially, what we are going to talk about is, first of all, how to hold a stick. And that is based around what is known as a double V grip.

And these should be made with two Vs. First of all, with the left hand at the top of the stick and the second V with the right hand, just underneath it, these would generally be pointing down to the back side of the stick, so that is the rounded edge, when you are controlling and moving the ball. And essentially that then comes into position, like so.

So that when you have the double V grip, you are in a very strong position and you are able to get all of your weight in behind the ball. From that position, you can manipulate the stick with the turn of your top hand and then allowing the bottom hand to just roll around the stick. And this will allow you to turn the stick head to the both sides.
