Step 1: Hold Please

There are several different ways to hold a runner on base but the key is to keep him from knowing what you will do next. You can do this by varying the time in which you hold in the set position. Switch it up from one second to up to four seconds so the runner has a hard time planning his jump to second base.

Step 2: The Ruse

An excellent way to try and get a read on what the offense is trying to do is to hold in your set position for four seconds and then step off the mound. You just might catch the runner taking off or the batter showing bunt.

Step 3: The Pick Off

When the runner takes a few extra steps on his lead from first, you're going to want to try and pick him off. You should have three different pick off speeds that you use; slow move, a quick move, and a pickoff move. This way the runner will never really know how fast you can pick him off until its too late.
