How To Hold Lacrosse Sticks
This Video talks about how to hold a lacrosse stick
Hi! My name is Sam Woody, I play attack for the Hillcroft down in the southern lacrosse league and I'm going to take you through just a few basic steps of how to hold a stick, how to throw a pass and catch, just kind of the basics you'll need if you're kind of new to the sport. First of all we've got the lacrosse stick itself. That's made up of two main bits; this is the shaft which you hold, that's where you get most of your power from.
I've got a bit of tape here for extra grip and on the main bit the actual end is your lacrosse head, it comes in different shapes and sizes. So that's your basic stick. The name for the game is to pass and catch to each other and put the ball at the back of the net, as I will explain later on.
So the easiest way of learning how to pass and catch is first of all if you're right handed, you want your left hand at the bottom of the stick and you want your right hand about your hip distance apart. What we do is when we are passing and catching the idea is to imagine a little imaginary box to the person you are throwing to and the basics are really easy over our motion. So you put your feet again shoulder width apart and if you are right handed, you are stepping into it with your left foot and then following through as so.
So basically its one easy motion, this is an over arm pass on a shot, obviously you just increase the velocity if you are passing and if you are shooting.
So again it is just like this and then you just step into it, straight over arm. And you should finish with your stick looking to where you want to shoot or pass the ball. Obviously if you are left handed, the same applies.
Switch hands, same position, this time when you are throwing, step in with your right foot and again, over and the stick should be pointing, so if I was passing to the camera, that is where the stick should finish off. So that was passing and catching the best way to do it is get a stick, get a ball, all you need is a brick wall and you can stand on your own. Just the basics, it just comes with time.
Just repetitiveness, at least get your eye in catch. And that's just a few tips to get you going, so good luck.
