Hi, I'm Sonia Jones. I'm a professional singing teacher and I'm going to give you tips and advice on how to sing. Okay, now the next step is how to record your vocals.

You have to have a basic knowledge of microphone technique. So, the first thing when you go into recording studios, you'll be given your mic. Make sure, and always make sure you do it yourself, that the mic is just right in the middle of your lips so the centrepiece is right in the middle.

And when you're singing soft, get close in, and when you're belting, you're using it like that so you can't have the technician turning the volume up and down or you'll get very weird sounds. So, you've got to learn the mic technique yourself. This thing here is called the pop shield and it's called a pop shield because it stops all the “pa” and the “s” so we don't the “pa” coming onto the track.

So, that's your basic setup for recording, and then of course, we have the headphones which, if I'm singing harmony, I like to have one off and one on so I can hear myself acoustically and then track. If I'm singing leads, vocal, I'd like to have both of them on so that I can use my voice as I want it for the light and shade and tone. So, this takes quite a bit of getting used to, so I should start practicing. .
