Hi. I am Veiko from Calligraphy studio in London. I have here an example of italic writing which is one of the most beautiful scripts in Calligraphy. I have enlarged the script on a photocopier.
After this, I will use double pencil to trace the letterforms. In the first one I have done here I have tried to work out the size of the letterforms and to begin thinking how the script is made. My next step is to work out the stroke order using different coloured pencils for each stroke. I have shown letters made with one line in one colour, a second colour for the second stroke etc. After this use a protractor to work and what pen angles are used and how the serifs are made.
Next I have tried to work out spacing, the yellow colour indicates quite wide spacing - wide four or five nib widths, if it is two curves together I have used a different colour. After I have completed the analysis I will use an ink pen to trace all my letters. Finally when I have learned how the script has been made I will create my own letterforms.
By doing this exercise will vastly improve your penmanship and your understanding of a script.
