Hello, my name is Micheal Ronayne. I am a director of the College of Public Speaking and I am going to be talking about different aspects of public speaking. Improving public speaking now, unfortunately public speaking is not a spectator sport.

You've got to do it and as a sportsman will tell you, there is a big difference between being fit and strong and being match fit. Now, I used to be a professional musician, exactly the same thing. You can practice a piece until you know it exactly backwards in your own living room.

But that's completely different to actually performing it. It's only after you perform it a few times that it really settles down. So if you need to improve and you want to improve your public speaking, you just need to get out there and do it and practice.

Now, it may be something very general like “I am a bit nervous about public speaking,” and then it's just a matter of do a lot of it. However, it might be something specific. Then what you need to be doing is making sure that you are getting good supportive feedback.

In fact, what I would recommend if you want to improve public speaking is probably to go out and find a speaking club. They are all over the country, there is the association of speakers club. They have got a network of clubs up and down the United Kingdom, toastmasters and other large organizations as well.

And the advantage of these organizations is you are going with group of other people just like you on things to do to improve public speaking. You speak, they speak, they give you feedback, you give them feedback. So it's a general learning experience for everybody together.

And the main benefit of it is to drip, drip confidence. Because improving public speaking has a lot to do with confidence. And to just go into a public speaking course, you may spend a day in public speaking course and come away from it feeling fantastic.

I know, I can deliver, but the point is it's a bit like going to an osteopath. You go to an osteopath, you crack away your bones, you felt fantastic but a week later, you will be back to where you were beforehand. So it's probably more useful if you want to improve your public speaking to join a club.

Do it just a little bit on a regular basis and build up your strength like a sportsman will. .
