How To Improve Your Dog's Behaviour

A well behaved dog is the result of consistent training, appropraite exercise, correct feeding and a loving realtionship. Here are some tips to help you achieve the right balance.

I'm going to talk to you about how to improve your dog's behavior. There is no perfect dog, first of all. I have five.

None of them are perfect. They're all pretty much well behaved, though. So, how do you get your dog to behave in a better way? Consistency has to be your starting point.

Everybody involved with the dog has to expect the same thing. The dog can't be allowed to jump up, jump on people because they say, “You know what, it's okay. I don't mind dogs”.

Your dog cannot be involved in a bad behavior with any one person and have 10 others saying, “Don't do that”. So, start with consistency. The next thing to look at is food.

If you're feeding your dog a diet that involves the feeding of any kind of artificial colors, additives, or preservatives, there is a possibility that those are actually affecting your dog's behavior. When you see conditions like ADD and ADHD in children, there are certain dogs whose reactions are very similar to that kind of a problem. Therefore, removing additives from your dog's diet can, on its own, actually produce a better behaved dog.

It can certainly help with certain cases of hyperactivity, of barking, and that type of problem. Then next thing to look at is stimulation. Is your dog bored? Is it getting enough exercise? Has it got enough to do? Don't use exercise instead of mental exercise.

It's nice to have a nice walk. It's nice to go down to the park, meet friends, run about, dig a whole, eat a bit of grass. That's quite interesting but it's also interesting to come home and find a very simple trick, such as a cardboard box with a few chews inside and have to work at how to get them out again.

People with very boisterous breeds do tend to over-exercise and they think if they tire them out physically, they're tired mentally. These things aren't the same. So, what you need to think about is your dog's overall life.

Is it getting enough exercise of the right type? Has it got enough mental exercise to suit its breed and its age? Has it got good rules and manners and is everybody asking the same kinds of questions of your dog and getting the same responses? That is how to improve your dog's behavior. .
