How To Install Wallpaper

In this step by step tutorial, Tom Walker, woodwork tutor at South Thames College in London, shows you how to remove old wallpaper and install new paper.

You Will Need

  • steamer
  • scraper
  • measure
  • pencil
  • spirit level
  • wallpaper paste
  • paint brush
  • wallpaper brush
  • stanley knife

Method

Firstly, remove the old wallpaper with a steamer. Be careful not to damage the wall with the scraper and that steam doesn't build up around light switches and other electrical sockets. Wash the bare wall with sugar soap to clear any remaining patches of glue.

Measure a line on the wall as a guide for the wallpaper. Cut 10cm off - so for wallpaper that is 56 cm wide, draw a line at 46 cm, to allow for wastage. Draw a level line using a spirit level. Measure the room size for the length of paper required. Again, allow 10 cm for wastage.

Measure a line of wallpaper on a paper table. Fold the paper over to give yourself a good line to cut from. Repeat the process so you have enough wallpaper to cover your first two drops.

Attach the wallpaper to the wall, smoothing it out with a paper brush. Once attached, cut of the excess paper using a stanley knife. Repeat this until the wall is covered.

Once the wallpaper is cut, prepare your wallpaper paste. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the pack of wallpaper to determine the correct consistency. Brush the paste on to the paper, making sure to cover the ends and corners. Let the glue soak into the paper for around 2 minutes.
