Jogging is a great way to exercise, but can carry a risk of injury like any other workout. Fitness trainer Mike Antoniades discusses proper jogging technique and how to start a regular jogging routine.
So, jogging is a very important part of everyday life, and we use it to lose weight, to keep fit, to de-stress. So it's important to know how to jog. Very simply, you don't run too quickly and too much too soon because that's a sure way of getting injured.
So if you haven't run for a long time, start by walking, do a good warm-up, warm-up for about ten minutes, then jog for thirty seconds, walk for thirty seconds, and repeat that for about twenty minutes. And remember to do your stretching at the end, rather than at the beginning because that's more beneficial for the body. So to become an efficient runner, it's really important that we look at the technique.
So how the arms work, how the legs work, how you land is very important. A lot of beginner joggers land very heavily and the heavier you are, the longer you spend on the ground, and the more you break. That's one way of getting injured.
So what we're trying to do is minimize the time you spend on the ground. So if we look at middle distance runners, they're running in excess of about nine - ten miles an hour. So, they will have almost a sprinting action.
So their arms will be pumping, so they will be moving back and coming forward to propel the body forward, and they're legs will be cycling and landing underneath their center of gravity. And their feet, they will either be landing heel-toe or flat on the balls of their feet. So if you're looking at this runner, his arms are moving backwards and forwards, his posture is upright so he's not leaning forward, and his heel is coming up almost to his backside.
So remember, to summarize on jogging, you don't want to do too much too quickly, otherwise you'll be stiff and the possibility of getting injured. So take it gradually, start by walking and jogging, and then increase the jogging gradually, and the time that you're spending on the ground. |Jogging is a great way to exercise, but can carry a risk of injury like any other workout.
