How to keep a conversation going. I think we've probably all been in that situation where the conversation dries up and that's pretty scary. You think, "Oh, what am I going to say?" So whether you find conversation easy or difficult, there are ways that you can use to create an ongoing conversation and get people talking.

One of the best ways to get people talking is simply to ask them an open question. Other than the obvious ones like, "How are you? What have you been up to?" begin by asking them questions based on anything you like. Just ask someone about themselves.

What they are interested in, perhaps what they did earlier in the day, or yesterday, and from that, just begin a series of gentle questioning. People love to be asked their opinion, or what they think about something, or what they're interested in and then ask another follow up. "Well, tell me more about that.

That sounds interesting". Without being pushy or without being one of those people who are asking so many questions, it's irritating. Of course, you have to do this gently, but one of the best ways of keeping conversations going is being interested and intrigued by the person you're speaking to, and being genuinely interested about them and asking them plenty of questions and get them to start talking.

Meanwhile, then you can get calm and you can begin to relax, and once you do so, you'll notice the conversation will spin a lot more easily. And to have a conversation, you don't have to be coming up with fantastic new stuff and be sparkling wit. You just have to be likeable and you just have to listen as well as speak, and perhaps an equal measure is a good way to go.

And if people feel comfortable just hanging out with you, then the conversation will flow, and it's not your responsibility to have it continue on. And pauses are fine. And sometimes when you just pause and wait, the other person will automatically fill up the space in between.

Keeping the conversation going needn't be a chore. Just relax and smile, and even say, "I don't know what to say next. What else would you like to talk about"? And you'll be sure that if the feeling is relaxed, the conversation will flow.
