How to keep awake at work. We've all had problems with falling asleep at work, so here are some simple steps that you can try to keep awake. Step 1: Drink coffee, the obvious one, but coffee and peppermint and strong smells like that can actually really keep you awake.

Step2: If you can take a power nap. Just getting 15 to 20 minutes of sleep can make a world of difference, but make sure that before you take the power nap, you have your cup of coffee, because by the time you've woken up, the caffeine will have kicked in. Step 3: Expose yourself to bright lights.

Natural daylight is a lot more effective than artificial light in this situation. Light helps because all of our bodies have a circadian rhythm, so simply seeing the light will trick our body into being more awake. Step 4: Exercise.

This can be pretty difficult to do at work, but even just constantly twitching or moving around at your desk can help, and in between running up and down the stairs is going to do you the world of good. Step 5: Stay cold, go out for fresh air, splash cold water on your face, drink a large glass of cold water. Strip off any layers such as jackets or jumpers so that you are on the edge of cold, and if possible, get a small fan and blow it at your face, that's sure to keep you awake.

Step 6: Stay a bit hungry. Being too full is going to put you to sleep. If you do want to eat something, make sure it is not something like a refined carbohydrate which is going to cause a temporary peak in your sugars but then dips, and make you fall asleep again.

Instead, go for something like a lean protein which is going to give you much more sustained energy release. Step 7: Drink plenty. Dehydration is a common cause of tiredness.

Step 8: When you get home, think about why you were so tired. Some of the commonest causes are alcohol, late nights, lack of exercise. If you are genuinely not sure, then it might be worth seeing you doctor to check that there's not something else going on, such as obstructive sleep apnea where the pattern of sleep is disturbed, and that is what's causing you to be so sleepy during the day.

And that's how to stay awake at work. .
