I'm going to show you how to make the knit stitch. There are two stitches in knitting: knitting and pearling. This is the first one.
To make the knit stitch, your yarn needs to be faced towards the back. You'll take your right empty needle, and you'll insert it from the left of the loop, like so. The right needle should be underneath the left needle.
Take your yarn. Wrap around the needle, and you're wrapping underneath. And then, when you pull back through the loop, you're going to pull tension on the yarn to keep the loop from popping off, and push towards you to get the new loop onto the right hand needle.
Finally, you'll let that old loop come off the left hand needle. I'll do it again. I insert from the left of the loop toward the back, right needle under the left needle, wrap my yarn from under the right needle, I'm going to pull back through that loop pushing the right needle toward me, so that I get the new loop onto the needle and then remove the old loop from the left needle.
Insert, wrap, push through, pushing towards you, and off the left needle. Insert, wrap, push towards you, and off the left needle. One more time: insert, wrap the yarn, push the needle towards you, and let the old loop come off.
And that's how you make the knit stitch. .
