How To Knit A Basket Weave Stitch
Expert knitter Rachel Ong shows you how to knit the basket weave stitch, which is an ornate stitch made from a combination of knit and purl stitches.
Step 1: You will need
- A pair of medium size needles
- A medium weight, cotton yarn
Step 2: Cast On
Cast on 13 stitches.

Step 3: Row One
On your first row, knit one stitch, purl three stitches, knit one stitch, purl three stitches and knit one, purl three stitches and knit one last stitch.
Step 4: Row Two
On the second row, purl the first stitch then knit three stitches, purl one stitch, knit three stitches, purl one stitch, knit three stitches and purl the last stitch.
Step 5: Rows Three and Four
Repeat the first two rows again.
On the right side of the fabric you will see the basket weave pattern appearing clearly.
Step 6: Row Five
Continuing on from the previous four rows, on the fifth row, purl the first stitch then knit three stitches, purl one stitch, then knit three stitches, purl one stitch then knit three stitches and finally purl one last stitch.
For the following three rows, purl all the purl stitches and knit all the knit stitches.
For the next four rows repeat Step Three by knitting one stitch, purling three, knitting one, purling three, knitting one, purling three and knitting the last stitch.
Again, knit all the knit stitches and purl all the purl stitches for the remaining three rows.
Continue by repeating these steps to create a beautiful fabric made up of the basket weave stitch.
