Row one

Cast on 12 stitches.

Holding the needle with the cast on stitches in your left hand, pick up the second needle in your right hand.
Knit 2 stitches as normal then bring your yarn between the tips of you needles to the front.
You are now in position to purl 2 stitches.
Once you have done this, bring the yarn to the back between the points of your needle and knit 2 stitches again.
Continue to alternate between 2 knit stitches and 2 purl stitches until you get to the end of the row.
If done correctly, you will end on 2 purl stitches.

Row two

Begin by knitting the first 2 stitches of the second row.
Once these 2 stitches are done, bring the yarn between the needles points to the front and purl the next 2 stitches. Continue until the end of the row when you will end on 2 purl stitches.
Always remember to bring the yarn to the back before knitting or to the front before purling and always carried between the needles when you do so.

Keep knitting

Keep knitting each row with these alternate stitches and before you know it you will have a piece of beautifully ribbed fabric or even a brand new scarf.

A good tip for stitching the rib stick is to knit the knits and purl the purls.
The knit and purl stitches look very different and it is a good idea to learn which one is which.
Then you will never forget to knit the knits and purl the purls.
