This is a guide how to learn acupuncture. If you want to learn acupuncture in the UK, you need to work with a registered recognized program of acupuncture. The British Acupuncture Council is the regulatory body for acupuncture in this country and they can give you a list of educational facilities where they offer acupuncture as a course.
Generally, acupuncture is a three-year course and part of a Bachelor of Science degree program. You can then go on further to learn and develop that into a Masters of Science and even PHD programs. For the moment though, if you just want to learn the basics and the idea, contact institutions which usually have Open Days which you go to and it gives you a feel for what is going on, feeling that you can also find local practitioners in your area who I am sure will more than happy to speak to you about acupuncture and how to learn to be an acupuncturist.
Acupuncture has a tradition that stretches back many thousands to years to working with insertion of small fine needles into the body, to particular areas of the body which we call acupuncture points. These points are on channels or meridians, they run through the body and they can be measured with instruments. You can use electric devices which will show you exactly where these points are, but for your education, you will be learning where all these points are and so that you can insert needles into these areas.
Acupuncture is generally painless. You can feel sensations of heaviness, a tingling sensation or even a mild ache sensation. Acupuncture has very few side effects and it is considered to be a safe form of intervention for treating many conditions.
The use of acupuncture is throughout the world and millions of treatments have been given with very few side effects and so can be used as adjacent to Western medicine or as a way of treating specific conditions individually, though you will need to speak to your acupuncture practitioner yourself about the particular medical history that you have. It is always very important to work hand in hand with Western medicine and your GP as well as your Chinese medicine doctor if you chose to go down that road. And that is my guide to how to learn acupuncture. .
