How To Learn Blanket Stitch
An embroidery expert demonstrates how to do a simple but complicated-looking blanket stitch, often used to finish the edge of projects.
I'm going to show you how to do blanket stitch. So, blanket stitch is really useful if you want to make a decorative and kind of folksy edging to a project. You can also just use it as a decorative stitch, as I've done here on the wings of this bird.
So, step 1, what you'll need to do for your blanket stitch is a piece of fabric - I'm using felt - you need some embroidery needles, some thread, so either cotton pearl or stranded embroidery floss, both are fine. Step 2, so you're bringing your needle up through your fabric. We're going to go from left to right across the fabric.
So, we're taking the needle down through the fabric, above and to the right of where we started it. We're going to bring the needle up, along the line, so that's to the right of where we started. We're going to put the thread under the needle and pull through.
So, we're a little reversed L shape. So, we take the needle into the fabric and up, keeping the thread under the needle. Taking the needle in and out, thread goes under the needle.
So, we're going in and out, thread goes under the needle, in and out, thread goes under the needle. So, we're making a line across the fabric. At the end, you're just going to secure it with a holding stitch.
So, we're just pushing the needle through, just to catch that last stitch. And that's how you do blanket stitch.
