Welcome to How to Learn Taekwondo. Now, let's start right at the beginning, okay. Taekwondo is a Korean martial art.

Now, it's designed to teach the Korean armies how to fight when there was hundreds and hundreds of them and it would have taken too long to take them one by one, they would drill them repetitive movements again and again so they could use them on the battlefield. Now, taekwondo is a very rigid and disciplined martial art and taekwondo itself stands for the way of the hand and the foot, okay. Now, taekwondo is a very direct martial art so when it comes to blocking, it goes to the principle of force against force.

So, it's very strong, always in its movements, okay. Now, same with every other martial art, if you're looking to really learn it, the best thing you need to do is to take yourself down to your local club and get enrolled and start with your journey, okay. But what I'm going to do today, since I'm feeling nice, I'm going to give you a little bit of an insight into a couple of moves.

Okay, so when we look at taekwondo, the way that they would train, they would use patterns, okay. It's important to know they're called patterns, not cutters, okay, because that's Japanese and this is a Korean martial art. One of the patterns that you'll find as you progress through is called yul gok, okay.

As a movement in yul gok, that goes as follows, one, two, three, okay. Now, what we're going to do is take that. I'm going to vary it slightly, okay, to add a little bit more of practicality to it and use it to a kick called a sidekick.

So let's see how it would work. The opponent comes in with a punch. From there, it's a block and a grab of the wrist, okay.

Now, I'm going to turn myself sideways, I'm going to pull with the arm as I kick with my sidekick there, okay, kicking with the blade of the foot in a stamping motion towards the floating ribcage which is the two ribs just underneath the main set, okay. The pull and the force of the kick together is going to cause a lot of pain and discomfort for my opponent and it's going to get me a good situation where I can leave if I was defending myself or if it's a competition, I'd score a good point in there, okay. Okay, so again, the punch comes in, there's a block, a grab, and a strike of the sidekick there.

Notice how I managed to lock my leg fully out and I pull him in nice and close to cause the damage, okay. It's also possible if you're not that flexible, which may be the case, to change your target area to strike the inside of the knee there, okay. I'll show you again.

Strike the inside of the knee there or even to slide down the kneecap of the back leg, okay, so you got some choices there. You wouldn't be able to use those in a competition environment but in self-defense, of course, you can, okay. Hope you found that useful, how to learn taekwondo.

Remember the message, get down to your local club and get in there, get stuck in for yourself, and learn it first hand for your own two eyes, okay. Hope you enjoyed yourself. See you next time.

Goodbye. .
