How To Leave A Stiletto Sized Carbon Footprint
Eco-friendly fashion, beauty, and lifestyle plus a mini-composting how-to from www.ecostiletto.com. Stiletto-size me!
Step 1: EcoStilletto
So, I like to think of EcoStilletto as the secret to smart and sexy green living. Basically what we're trying to do is teach you how to shrink your carbon footprint from a gigantic Ugg boot to a tiny little Manolo. That's EcoStilletto.
Step 2: Nail Polish
Did you know that most nail polishes contain formaldehyde, DVP and tolulene? Those are three chemicals that cause birth defects! You can get nail polish with none of that stuff, and none of the formaldehyde that makes your nails turn yellow when you take it off.
Step 3: Green Living
At EcoStilletto, basically I'm covering everything that you as a woman are interested in buying, learning about, or implementing in your life. It's not just about buying new things that are green.
It's about learning how to reuse something that you already have in a new way. Or looking at something that you're already doing and seeing if maybe you could do it a different way. Like composting, for example. I hate composting! I do not like worms, I do not like sticking my finger in the dirt, I don't like all that stuff!
Step 4: How To Compost
You dump your green scraps and your coffee grounds into a bowl. Just set it next to your sink, and then once a day or every other day you dump it in here. You can get a little peek at that.
See, I don't like worms! I don't like composting! But my husband loves it. We turn it over, the worms eat it, it makes this amazing stuff that we stick on the garden and it makes incredible vegetables. So it's worth it. Plus, you cut down your trash by a third. It's awesome! Bowl, compost.
Step 5: Easy Hints
You know, EcoStilletto basically is just a little piece of your day, right? Maybe you check it when you're checking your email when you come home from work. Or maybe you take a little break at work and you go to see what's up on the site. So it's really a small thing. But if it can get you to think a little bit bigger about the things that you buy every day. Like me for example. I didn't know a lot of this stuff when I started writing about it.
Step 6: Research Your Carbon Footprint
I basically just did my research as I went along. And I learned, "Oh my God! That pair of jeans that I just bought cost the Earth two-thirds of a pound of pesticides!" Cotton is the most heavily-sprayed crop in the entire world. I had no idea! Chemicals in my sunscreen, chemicals in the moisturizer that I put on every day.
I started learning about them. And I think that, as I'm learning about them, I'm sharing them with you guys. And you, too, are learning. Hopefully that will help you make a more informed decision the next time you go to buy a pair of jeans, or the next time you go to buy a moisturizer or sunscreen. You'll think, "Oh, wait a minute. I read about that chemical, I'm looking at that label and I don't think I'm going to buy that one. Maybe I'll look for another one."
