Have you had your hair colored, and if so, do you know how to treat your hair afterwards? In this video, London hair stylist Brad Metcalfe gives you advice on how to get the most out of your hair color, and how to care for your hair the professional way.
Today, I'm going to talk to you a little bit about the importance of maintenance of hair, especially after color, and color maintenance, and helping to get the longest or the most time out of your color. There are a lot of hair care products out in the market at the moment that are very heavily advertised and don't cost a lot of money. And the problem with a lot of those sorts of brands is it's like a Band-Aid solution to your hair care.
The best thing for you to do is to get advice from a salon and get a good hair care range. With your Band-Aid products, or your cheaper products, they tend to be full of silicon. Now, what that does is it coats the hair.
But basically just coating each hair in plastic, it makes the hair thin, shiny or feel smooth, and makes it look shiny, but it's not actually doing anything to the core of the hair, to repair the hair or to help save your color from fading. There's no real rule to how often you should wash your hair. It's a very much personal thing.
Generally, if your hair is a little bit oily, you will need to wash it more often. If it is oilier, you're better to wash it without using really hot water. Keep the water lukewarm to cool.
The warmer the water is, the more you're going to stimulate the oil production on your scalp. If your hair is a little bit drier, then using a good conditioner and probably a weekly mask is good for your hair to help get moisture back into your hair. It shouldn't matter if you're shampooing your hair every day if you need to, but as long as you're putting the moisture back into the hair.
If you're having your hair color done, a professional hair color, generally, it will depend on firstly fading, so whether you're using good products to help maintain your color, but it will also depend on how quickly you'll get regrowth. Normally, a hair grows about a centimeter a month. Styling your hair at home is obviously going to affect your hair and it's going to affect your hair color.
If you're using very high irons all the time, the important thing to remember is to use something to protect the hair while you're styling it. Keep your irons on a medium heat so they're not too hot. As with your dryer, keep that on a medium heat and keep the tools moving at all times.
So the important thing to remember to care for colored hair is using good quality products that are recommended to you, making sure that you're not over-styling the hair or not being too harsh with the hair while you're styling it. And that's how you maintain colored hair. .
